This solution works on all recent xorg versions, so it should work on all modern Linux distros.
- Press Ctr+Shift+U.
- Release U while still holding Ctr+Shift.
- Enter the four digit character code, e.g. 2013 for an m-dash, or 2014 for a n-dash.
